Peeta Mellark is ENFJ. He has understood the political value of appearing to be exactly who he actually is - warm, genuine, in love with Katniss - since before the Games began, and uses that understanding with a strategic sophistication that most people around him miss because it looks like sincerity. It is sincerity. That is the ENFJ's most complete gift: the authentic expression of genuine care is also the most effective possible tool, and Peeta never has to choose between them. He does not compete in the Hunger Games. He manages the public's relationship to Katniss while she manages the arena's physical demands. The division is the ENFJ's most honest possible relationship to what it cannot do: the Fe provides what the INTJ's Ni-Te cannot generate, and the INTJ provides what the ENFJ's Fe cannot build alone.
His brainwashing - the hijacking, the mutt-tracker venom, the false memories - is the ENFJ's most specific vulnerability rendered literal: the Fe that reads people by receiving their emotional reality has been given false emotional reality to read. He is not brainwashed into hating Katniss. He is given false memories that produce the experience of genuine feeling about those memories. The ENFJ cannot distinguish between genuine feeling and the feeling produced by false inputs, because the dominant function's operation does not have an accuracy-verification layer. It receives. When the reception is corrupted, the reading is corrupted.
His recovery - "Real or not real?" - is the inferior Ti finally being deployed as the verification mechanism the dominant function cannot provide on its own. He cannot trust his own emotional reception. He asks Katniss to verify. That asking is the ENFJ discovering the inferior function's most specific available use: not as an analytical engine but as a reality-check for the dominant function's most complete vulnerability.
Why Peeta Mellark Is ENFJ, Not INFJ or ENFP
Peeta is sometimes typed ISFJ - the apparent care, the quiet loyalty, the service orientation. But ISFJ's Si is dominant: it operates from accumulated precedent. Peeta's most significant acts are all Ni-generated: he saw where Katniss's arc was pointing before she did, synthesised the public narrative that would protect her, and built the performance around the synthesis. He did not follow an existing template; he generated the correct approach from the reading the Fe provided.
The INFJ argument comes from his apparent visionary quality. But INFJ's Ni is primary: the synthesis precedes the engagement. Peeta leads with Fe: the reading of the specific person is primary, and the Ni synthesises the long-range picture from what the reading produces. He loved Katniss first. The strategy followed. That love-first sequence is ENFJ.
The clincher is the cave. He tells the love story to the Hunger Games audience not because the Ni synthesised that it was strategically optimal (INTJ/INFJ) or because the Te assessed it as institutionally appropriate (ESTJ). He tells it because the Fe has been holding this specific truth about this specific person for years, the arena provided the conditions for the expression, and the Ni immediately synthesised that the expression would simultaneously serve Katniss's survival. The love and the strategy are inseparable because for the ENFJ they are the same operation.
