He keeps a marmalade sandwich under his hat in case of emergency. He is unfailingly polite, remembers everything anyone has ever told him, and deploys a hard stare when people behave badly.
Who Is Paddington Bear?
Paddington first appeared in A Bear Called Paddington, published by Michael Bond in 1958. He comes from Darkest Peru, was raised by his Aunt Lucy, and stowed away on a ship after she went into the Home for Retired Bears in Lima. The Brown family find him at Paddington Station sitting on a battered suitcase with a label round his neck: please look after this bear, thank you.
Bond has said the image came from wartime newsreel of evacuee children waiting at railway stations with labels tied to their coats, and the whole character is built on that - a small displaced person arriving alone in a country that could receive him well or badly. The Browns take him home to 32 Windsor Gardens. He keeps a marmalade sandwich under his hat for emergencies, and the hat itself belonged to his uncle.
What is the hard stare?
Aunt Lucy taught him. When somebody behaves badly - rudely, dishonestly, unkindly - Paddington gives them a long, level, disappointed look, and it is remarkably effective on adults who have been getting away with things for years. It is the character's only weapon and it is entirely moral. The Paul King films of 2014, 2017 and 2024 built on exactly this, and Paddington 2 in particular - in which he is wrongly imprisoned and reforms an entire prison largely through good manners and marmalade - is one of the few adaptations that improved on the source.

Paddington is dominant Si, and it is what makes a polite bear into a character rather than a mascot. He remembers everything: what Aunt Lucy told him, what somebody promised last week, how a thing is properly done, what each of the Browns likes. His whole method is the faithful application of accumulated instruction from a person who is no longer present, and the marmalade sandwich under the hat is Si as a life philosophy - be prepared, keep the useful thing where you can reach it.
The auxiliary Fe is why the stories work. He attends to people continuously - noticing that Mr Brown is unhappy, that Mrs Bird is worried, that the shopkeeper is being cheated - and his interventions are aimed at what somebody needs rather than at what he wants. The hard stare is Fe with the politeness removed for a moment: a direct communication of disappointment to a person who has failed a standard.
Why does Paddington cause so much chaos?
Because inferior Ne means he cannot anticipate the unprecedented, and almost everything in London is unprecedented to a bear from Peru. He applies remembered procedure faithfully to a situation the procedure was never designed for, and the result is a flooded bathroom or a wrecked shop window. It is never carelessness; it is a highly conscientious creature doing exactly what he was told in a context nobody told him about. The tertiary Ti is what he uses to work out how something is meant to function, usually about four minutes after it has stopped functioning.
Paddington Bear: ISFJ Letter by Letter
He is quiet, watchful and easily overwhelmed by crowds, and his most characteristic moment is a long silent look rather than a speech. The interior life - the letters to Aunt Lucy, the careful reflection - is where the character actually lives.
Marmalade sandwich under the hat, in case. He operates on stored, concrete, practical knowledge - what he was taught, what he has seen work, what somebody said three chapters ago - and remembers all of it exactly.
He notices when people are unhappy and does something about it, usually at cost to himself. The hard stare is a moral instrument aimed at somebody who has treated another person badly, and it is the only aggression he has.
He has firm standards and applies them without exception, to duchesses and to shopkeepers alike. Aunt Lucy's instructions are not guidelines, and the entire comic engine of the books is a bear following the rules exactly in a country that does not.
Why Paddington Bear Is ISFJ, Not ISTJ or INFJ
ISFP is sometimes suggested because of the gentleness and the evident inner life. The difference is what governs him. An Fi-dominant bear would act from personal conviction; Paddington acts from what Aunt Lucy taught him and from what the people around him need, and he is visibly distressed when he has let somebody down rather than when he has betrayed himself.
INFP is occasionally proposed because of the sincerity. But his frame of reference is entirely concrete and remembered - the instructions, the recipes, the manners, the specific promises - rather than idealistic, and he is at his most confident when applying something he has been taught.
