Martin Luther
Martin Luther is INFJ. An Augustinian friar and professor at a provincial German university, he posted ninety-five theses against the sale of indulgences on 31 October 1517 and started something he had not intended and could not stop. Ordered at the Diet of Worms in 1521 to recant, he refused. Hidden at the Wartburg, he translated the New Testament into German in about eleven weeks. He also wrote, twenty years later, some of the most vicious antisemitic material in European history.
Who Was Martin Luther?
Martin Luther was born on 10 November 1483 at Eisleben and died there on 18 February 1546. He was studying law when a terrifying thunderstorm in 1505 led him to vow to become a monk, and he entered an Augustinian monastery against his father's furious objection. He was ordained, took a doctorate, and became professor of biblical studies at the new University of Wittenberg.
His theological crisis was personal before it was public. He was tormented by the question of how a person could ever be righteous enough for God, and arrived, reading Paul, at the conclusion that righteousness is given rather than earned - justification by faith. Everything that followed proceeds from that.
What did Luther actually do?
On 31 October 1517 he sent his Ninety-five Theses against the sale of indulgences to his archbishop, and by tradition posted them on the door of the Castle Church at Wittenberg. Printing did the rest: they were across Germany within weeks and across Europe within months, which is not what an academic disputation was supposed to do. Summoned before the Diet of Worms in April 1521 and ordered to recant, he refused - the famous formulation about being unable to do otherwise is probably a later embellishment, but the refusal is not. Excommunicated and outlawed, he was hidden by his prince at the Wartburg castle, where he translated the New Testament into German in roughly eleven weeks, producing a text that shaped the modern German language much as the King James Bible shaped English. He married Katharina von Bora, a former nun, in 1525, and their household became the model for Protestant clerical family life. In 1543 he published On the Jews and Their Lies, which calls for the burning of synagogues and the expulsion of Jews from German lands, and which was reprinted by the Nazis four centuries later. It is his, and it belongs in any account of him.

Luther is dominant Ni, and the tell is that the whole Reformation proceeds from one perception that arrived whole. He did not accumulate objections to church practice and reach a position; he had a single organising insight about grace, and every subsequent argument - indulgences, papal authority, the sacraments, the priesthood of all believers - is that insight applied outward. He said afterwards that he had not set out to break anything, and the record supports him: he had found something true and could not stop stating it.
The auxiliary Fe is why it became a mass movement rather than an academic dispute. He wrote in German, for ordinary people, in a plain vigorous idiom nobody had used for theology, and the translation of the Bible is the ultimate expression of it - the conviction that this material belongs to the ploughboy rather than to the clerks. He also wrote hymns for congregations to sing, which is Fe supplying a whole population with something to do with the idea.
How does the antisemitism fit?
Uncomfortably, and not as an aberration. Fe attaches to a community and defines it, and in his last years Luther's definition hardened into something murderous toward those outside it. He had earlier written more sympathetically about Jews, in the expectation that a reformed church would convert them; when it did not happen, the tertiary Ti constructed an elaborate justification and the writing turned to expulsion and burning. The inferior Se is the rest of the biography - the extraordinary physical complaints, the rages, the coarseness that shocked even his allies, and a body he treated as an enemy for most of his life.

The crisis that produced the Reformation was a private struggle in a monastery cell about his own salvation. He was a professor in a small town, and the public figure arrived because a document escaped rather than because he sought a platform.
One insight about grace, arrived at whole, and then applied to indulgences, authority, the sacraments and the priesthood in turn. He did not build the position up from objections; he derived the objections from the position.
He translated the Bible into German so that ordinary people could read it, wrote hymns for them to sing, and argued in the vernacular. The whole programme is about who is allowed access, which is a question about people rather than about doctrine.
Told to recant before the Emperor with his life at stake, he refused, and never revisited it. Every position he took was closed and held, including the ones that curdled - which is why his late writing on the Jews is as immovable as his early writing on grace.
Why Martin Luther Is INFJ, Not INFP or INTJ
INTJ is the most common alternative, given the systematic theology and the willingness to defy an institution alone. The difference is the audience. An Ni-Te reformer builds a structure; Luther wrote catechisms, hymns and a vernacular Bible aimed at ordinary people, and his central innovation is that everyone should have direct access rather than that the institution should be redesigned.
ENFJ is occasionally suggested because of the enormous public impact. But the founding conviction was reached alone across years of private torment, and he was by temperament a scholar who found the public role thrust on him by a printing press he had not anticipated.
