Kevin Garvey is ISFP. Who Is Kevin Garvey?
Kevin Garvey is the central character of The Leftovers, created by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta and broadcast on HBO from 2014 to 2017, played by Justin Theroux. The premise is the Sudden Departure: on a single day, two percent of the world's population disappeared without explanation, and the series begins three years later, entirely uninterested in explaining it. Kevin is the chief of police in Mapleton, New York, and his job is to hold together a town in which nothing is holding together.
His family has come apart in different directions. His wife Laurie leaves to join the Guilty Remnant, a cult whose members wear white, chain-smoke and refuse to speak. His son Tommy attaches himself to a man called Holy Wayne who claims to absorb people's pain. His daughter Jill is at home, furious. His father, Kevin Garvey Sr, was the chief before him and is now institutionalised, hearing voices that he insists are real.
What happens to Kevin Garvey?
He starts sleepwalking and doing things he has no memory of. He is haunted, persistently and specifically, by Patti Levin, a Guilty Remnant leader who is dead and who will not stop talking to him. The later seasons take the ambiguity and remove it: Kevin dies, repeatedly, and comes back, passing through an elaborate afterlife that the show refuses to confirm or deny as real. The question that runs underneath it - whether he is a man having a breakdown exactly like his father's, or something genuinely other - is never resolved, and the series is better for it. His relationship with Nora Durst, who lost her husband and both children in the Departure, is the emotional centre of the whole thing.

The show declines to say, and the function stack explains why the question is the right one to leave open. Tertiary Ni in an ISFP arrives late, unbidden and without any framework to evaluate it - visions, convictions and patterns that feel true from the inside and cannot be checked from the outside, which is precisely the position Kevin is in. His father experienced the same thing and was hospitalised for it. The inferior Te is why he cannot manage any of it: he has no capacity to organise his own life around what is happening to him, and every attempt to impose structure - the job, the family, the marriage - collapses under a man who can only act on what he feels in the moment.

He says almost nothing about what is happening to him, to his family, his colleagues or his partner. The show routinely gives the audience access to his interior through dreams and hallucinations because he will not provide it any other way.
His response to distress is physical: running until he cannot, fighting people he should not, driving somewhere at speed. The performance is built out of a body that is doing all the communicating the character cannot manage in words.
Everything he does is driven by a private judgement he cannot articulate - about his father, his wife, his children, Nora. The show's most devastating scenes are the ones where he clearly knows exactly what he feels and has no route from there to a sentence.
He improvises his way through a catastrophe with no plan at any point across three seasons. Jobs, towns, marriages and identities are picked up and abandoned as the situation shifts, and the one structure he keeps trying to hold is the one that keeps breaking.
Why Kevin Garvey Is ISFP, Not INFP or ISTP
ISTJ is sometimes suggested because he is a police chief holding a town together, and the surface reads as duty. But he is spectacularly bad at procedure. He conceals evidence, acts on impulse, abandons the job repeatedly, and his decisions are consistently driven by private feeling rather than by what the role requires. The uniform is a costume the character cannot actually inhabit.
ISTP comes up because of the physicality and the reticence. The distinction is what drives the action. Ti-Se produces a man who reads the situation and finds the efficient solution; Kevin's actions are emotional discharges that frequently make things worse, and he knows it while he is doing them.
