Hannah Arendt
Hannah Arendt is INTP. Her concept of the "banality of evil" - Eichmann not as monster but as bureaucrat, executing orders without thinking - required the INTP's most difficult quality: the insistence on precise categories when imprecision was politically and morally convenient, when everyone who had survived Nazism wanted a different kind of conclusion. He was a person who had suspended the capacity for thought in the service of an institutional framework. The synthesis arrived before the evidence was adequate. The Te spent years building the framework that made the synthesis legible.
Her relationship with Heidegger is the inferior Fe's most complete and most contested record: the specific person who the inferior function had designated as the most significant available intellectual investment, whose subsequent collaboration with National Socialism the synthesis had to accommodate without revising the inferior function's foundational record. She maintained the relationship across decades. The inferior function had the record. The synthesis produced the framework for how the collaboration was possible without revising the record's most foundational entry.
The Origins of Totalitarianism is the Te's most complete available institutional expression: the Ni synthesis had identified what totalitarianism actually was - not a continuation of prior authoritarian forms but a genuinely novel phenomenon requiring a new framework - and the Te built the most comprehensive available framework before the institutional scholarship had developed adequate tools for receiving it. She was early. The synthesis was complete before the evidence was sufficient.
Why Hannah Arendt Is INTP, Not INTJ or INFP
Arendt is sometimes typed INFJ - the apparent depth and the sense of a comprehensive vision she is pursuing. But INFJ's vision is held in relation to people through Fe. Arendt's synthesis is held in relation to the political configuration - what totalitarianism is, what evil is, what the vita activa requires - and the specific people are the material through which the synthesis is implemented. Her caring about Eichmann's victims is the inferior Fe. Her synthesis about what Eichmann was is the dominant function.
The INTP argument comes from the analytical precision of the philosophical work. But INTP builds Ti frameworks and finds the exploration interesting. Arendt synthesises what each specific political configuration contains and implements the synthesis through the most efficient available scholarly form. The synthesis preceded the framework. The framework was the Te's implementation of the synthesis's requirements.
The clincher is "Eichmann in Jerusalem." She covered the trial and produced the most contested available assessment of what the trial contained. The assessment was correct - the synthesis had identified what Eichmann actually was - and the assessment was received as monstrous because the available frameworks for understanding evil had designated monsters as the requirement. The synthesis violated the requirement. The Te delivered the synthesis. The controversy followed. She did not revise the synthesis. The Ni does not revise from controversy.
