Data
Data is INTP aspiring toward human experience from the outside. He approaches emotion as a system to be understood and models it with considerable success - his relationship with Spot the cat, his friendship with Geordi, his aspiration toward the creative arts - and his arc across TNG is the INTP acknowledging that what he was missing was not logic but permission to want. His emotion chip in the films is not the resolution but the next problem: now that he can feel, the question is what to do with what he feels.
Data and the INTP Mind
Data is INTP. The type is defined by a hierarchy of cognitive functions - not a checklist of traits but an ordered stack of mental processes that determines how someone perceives the world and how they make decisions. For Data, that stack leads with Ti (Introverted Thinking) and is supported by Ne (Extraverted Intuition). Understanding that order explains not just what Data does but why - and why they respond the way they do under pressure, in relationships, and at the turning points of their arc.
Data's mind is a precision instrument. Ti (Introverted Thinking) is the dominant function - it builds rigorous internal logical frameworks that are more important to Data than external consensus, social approval, or received wisdom. The framework is primary; everything else is input to be tested against it. Ne (Extraverted Intuition) as the auxiliary generates the possibilities, alternatives, and angles that Ti then analyses with full rigour. The result is a character who is endlessly curious, genuinely difficult to satisfy with simple answers, and deeply uncomfortable with conclusions that cannot be fully justified. The inferior Fe (Extraverted Feeling) is the tell: in moments of stress or genuine depth, Data reveals a need for connection and acknowledgment that sits in visible tension with their usual detachment - the function they rarely use, suddenly making claims the dominant function is not equipped to address.
What makes Data a compelling example of INTP is not that they demonstrate every item on the type description, but that the function stack holds under pressure. In the moments that define their story in Star Trek: The Next Generation - the decisions under stress, the failures of judgment, the rare moments of genuine growth - the pattern is consistent. The dominant function is what Data reaches for first. The inferior function is what catches them off guard.

Data: What the INTP Profile Explains
Data's INTP profile is Star Trek's most precise portrait of the type in its most revealing fictional form: an artificial being whose Ti dominant is literally the primary design specification, whose Ne auxiliary enables the associative capacity that makes the Ti generative rather than merely consistent, and whose inferior Fe is the explicit subject of his entire character arc. He wants to be human not because humans are superior but because the inferior function - the emotional register, the relational warmth, the specific quality of experience that the Ti framework cannot generate - is the one domain his comprehensive intelligence cannot access, and the INTP's constitutive relationship to its inferior function is precisely this: it knows it is missing something, it can name what it is missing with Ti precision, and it cannot generate the missing thing through any available application of the dominant function.
His emotion chip arc is the INTP's inferior function integration story made literal: the technology that makes the inferior Fe available also makes it overwhelming, because the inferior function is not calibrated - it arrives at full volume, undifferentiated, without the developmental history that gives the inferior function its characteristic human texture. Laughter at inappropriate moments, fear responses at disproportionate intensity: the inferior function running without the developmental context that shapes how it operates in humans who have been running it since childhood.
His death in Nemesis and his eventual restoration are the franchise's acknowledgment that the INTP without the inferior Fe is the INTP's most complete expression of who it is, and that the inferior Fe, when finally integrated, changes the character in ways that are both growth and loss simultaneously. He is more complete with the Fe. He is also different. The Ti that defined him was always running alongside an absence. The Fe fills the absence and the Ti continues. Both things are permanently true.
Why Data Is INTP, Not INTJ or INFP
Data is sometimes typed INTJ - the comprehensive model, the apparent certainty, the long-range strategic thinking. But INTJ's Ni synthesises patterns into convergent visions. Data builds Ti frameworks and evaluates them for internal consistency. His famous "I am in error" - delivered without emotional charge when the Ti has identified an inconsistency in its own output - is Ti, not Ni. The INTJ whose model is wrong defends it longer. Data corrects immediately when the framework's consistency fails. That correction speed is the Ti's relationship to accuracy: the framework must be right, and "right" is internally consistent, not convergent with a vision.
The ISTJ argument comes from his procedural quality, his institutional loyalty to Starfleet, his consistency of behaviour. But ISTJ's Si operates from accumulated precedent. Data does not operate from precedent; he derives from first principles. Each ethical question he encounters is assessed from the Ti framework's architecture, not from the Si library's accumulated verdicts. His ethical positions evolve as the framework processes new inputs. ISTJ ethical positions are stable because the Si is stable. Data's evolve because the Ti is always running.
The clincher is his poetry, his paintings, his violin. He creates not because the Fe drives creativity - the Fe is barely accessible for most of the series - but because the Ti framework has identified creativity as a domain that the Ne auxiliary can explore, and the Ne generates the output that the inferior Fe would have if the inferior function were more available. His paintings are Ne-Ti exploring the artistic domain. His poetry is the Ne generating the most precise available framework for human emotional experience in language form. An ISTJ would have replicated established forms. Data generates from structure. That generation is INTP.
The INTP Personality
Precise, conceptual, and endlessly curious about how things actually work. INTPs build internal logical frameworks and are uncomfortable committing to conclusions before they have been fully examined. Their intelligence is quiet but unusually deep.
