Boyd Crowder
Boyd Crowder is INTJ. Walton Goggins played him across six seasons of Justified as the smartest man in Harlan County, Kentucky, and the one who could never quite leave it. He is a former soldier turned white supremacist turned preacher turned career criminal, and the show's running joke is that every reinvention is completely sincere at the time. He talks in complete paragraphs, is always two moves ahead of the marshals, and is undone by the one variable he could not model, which is that he actually loves someone.
Who Is Boyd Crowder?
Boyd Crowder is the principal antagonist of Justified, the FX crime drama adapted from Elmore Leonard's writing, played by Walton Goggins across six seasons. He is from Harlan County in eastern Kentucky, coal country, and he and Raylan Givens - the deputy US marshal the series follows - dug coal together as young men, which is the fact the entire relationship rests on.
He was written to be killed in the pilot. Goggins' performance was good enough that the producers brought him back, and the show reorganised itself around the pairing. Boyd's biography is a sequence of complete conversions: army demolitions, then a white supremacist cell, then a genuine and apparently sincere religious ministry after Raylan shoots him, then organised crime again - robbery, drugs, and eventually an attempt at something like a legitimate business empire in a county with nothing left in it.
What makes Boyd Crowder such a good villain?
He is not a thug and he is not stupid, and the show never lets you forget that he could have been anything if he had been born eighty miles in any direction. His speech is elaborate, formal and genuinely eloquent, and it is a weapon: he talks people into things, out of things, and around things, and the marshals lose more encounters to his mouth than to his gun. His relationship with Ava Crowder is the axis of the later seasons, and it is what finally beats him. The series ends with Boyd and Raylan alive, in a room, with the truth between them.

A cell, a congregation, a crew, a network, a bar with a business behind it - Boyd's instinct with any conviction is to construct the organisation that expresses it, and he does it fast and well every single time, with whatever material Harlan County happens to contain.
Why doesn't Boyd Crowder ever leave Harlan?
Because tertiary Fi attaches to specific things and will not release them, and his attachments are all local: Ava, his father, the county itself, and Raylan. He is repeatedly offered exits and never takes one. The inferior Se is the recurring failure mode - a man operating four moves ahead who is consistently blindsided by what is physically happening in front of him, whether that is a raid, a gun already drawn, or the fact that the woman across the table has been informing on him for months.

He talks constantly and tells you almost nothing. The elaborate speech is a screen, and the actual planning happens privately, in advance, and is revealed to his own crew only at the point of execution.
He reads situations years out. Where the money in a dying coal county will come from next, which alliance will collapse, what a federal agent will do with a piece of information - he is consistently operating on a version of events that has not arrived yet.
People are assets and liabilities in his calculations, including men who have followed him for years. He is capable of genuine warmth and it never once prevents him from doing the arithmetic when the arithmetic is required.
Every phase of his life is a fully built structure with a hierarchy and a purpose, and he moves to the next one only when the last is finished. Nothing about him is drift, which is exactly why he is so hard to arrest.
Why Boyd Crowder Is INTJ, Not INFJ or ENTJ
ENTP is the most common alternative, and the volubility and the improvisational charm make it an easy read. But Boyd does not generate options for their own sake. Each phase of his life is a single settled conviction pursued to its end with an organisation built around it, and he abandons a framework only when it has actually failed rather than because a more interesting one appeared. ENTJ is occasionally suggested because he leads crews and builds enterprises. The difference is that he works from concealment and prefers it. The businesses are fronts, the ministry was partly a cover, and his most effective operations are the ones nobody knows he is running until they are finished.
