Bilbo Baggins is ISFP. He is comfortable, domestic, and entirely certain of what he wants until Gandalf arrives - and then the other half of the ISFP surfaces, the part that the Shire had no room for. He runs out the door without a handkerchief and it is the best decision he ever makes. His courage with Gollum in the Misty Mountains is ISFP at full expression: present, improvisational, grounded in a personal standard about what is right. He comes back, writes a book, and eventually leaves the Ring to Frodo - both acts of someone who knows exactly what a thing costs and chooses it anyway.

His Si library contains the most comprehensive available record of what a respectable Baggins does and does not do, and the Te has been implementing the library's standard with complete fidelity for fifty years. No adventures. Second breakfast. The specific comfort of Bag End's specific rooms. The Si library's accumulated standard for what makes a life well-lived is present in every detail of the opening chapter. Then thirteen dwarves arrive and Gandalf's manipulation of the inferior Ne produces the one available override of the library's standard: this is the adventure you have always been capable of, and the Si library has never had adequate grounds for that entry until now.
His relationship with the Arkenstone is the inferior Ne's most complete and most dangerous operation: the specific object, encountered in the present tense, which the inferior function generates around with the full generative capacity it normally withholds. He takes the Arkenstone not from greed but from the inferior Ne finding, for the first time in fifty years, the one available thing the Si library has never contained. The exterior world's most compelling available object: the thing that the dominant function's complete contentment with what the library already contains has made it incapable of generating interest in. The inferior Ne is not immune to the one thing the dominant function could not generate.
"I'm going on an adventure!" That statement - delivered in the specific moment when the Si library's accumulated standard for what a Baggins does has been overridden by the inferior Ne's most complete available operation - is the ISFJ discovering that the library was incomplete. The incompleteness is corrected by the adventure. The corrected library is what Bilbo brings home.
Why Bilbo Baggins Is ISFP, Not INFP or ISTP
Bilbo is sometimes typed INFP - the apparent interior richness, the values-driven quality of his departure, the depth of feeling in the Shire sequences. But INFP's Fi is primary: the values generate the departure. Bilbo's departure is Ne-auxiliary, enabled by an external intervention (Gandalf) that bypassed the Si library's normal management of the inferior function. The INFP would have wanted to leave before Gandalf arrived. Bilbo genuinely did not want to leave until the inferior Ne was specifically activated.
The ENFP argument comes from his warmth, the apparent generativity of the riddle game with Gollum. But ENFP generates from the inside out - the Ne is expansive and primary. Bilbo generates in specific present-tense situations when the Si library has no template and the inferior Ne is the only available instrument. The riddle game is the inferior Ne running at maximum capacity because the Si library contains no entry for "trapped in a cave with a creature playing riddles with your life." The generation is situational and inferior, not primary and expansive.
The clincher is his return to Bag End. He runs home. Not because the adventure was insufficient but because the Si library has the record of everything Bag End contains - the specific rooms, the specific kettle, the specific quality of the specific morning light - and the Te cannot wait to implement what the library's most complete outstanding obligation requires: return to the specific place the Si has been holding as the primary record of home. He runs. The library was correct about home. The adventure corrected the library about everything else.
