Atticus Finch
Atticus Finch is INFJ. He acts from a moral vision of what Maycomb could be - not what it is, not what it has always been - and pursues it through the only method available to someone who lives inside the community they are trying to change: sustained, visible, consistent example. He does not march. He does not protest. He takes the case, he makes the argument in open court with full knowledge of the outcome, and he makes sure Scout and Jem watch from the balcony. His patience with the racism around him is not acceptance but strategy: the INFJ knows that transformation requires presence, and presence requires not being expelled. Go Set a Watchman complicates the portrait, which is probably more accurate to reality anyway.

Atticus Finch: INFJ Letter by Letter
Atticus does not explain himself. The defence of Tom Robinson, the decision not to prosecute Boo Radley, the specific way he manages the mob at the jail, all of these arrive as completed decisions rather than as processes the exterior world is invited to observe or participate in. Scout and Jem know what their father has decided. They do not know, for most of the novel, how he arrived at the decision or what the decision cost him. The Introvert holds the serious processing inside and produces the result. The result is all the exterior receives. Maycomb's understanding of Atticus Finch is entirely based on the results, what he does, not what he thinks while deciding to do it.
His relationship with Miss Maudie is the Introvert's most honest social portrait: genuine warmth, genuine engagement, genuine mutual understanding, maintained at the specific distance that the Introvert's architecture requires and accepted by both parties as the form the relationship actually takes. He is not withholding from Miss Maudie. He is being himself, and himself is primarily interior, and the interior shares itself with specific people in specific ways that are never quite the full disclosure an Extravert would offer. She understands this. The understanding is part of what makes her the most honest observer of his character in the novel.
He sees what Maycomb is doing to itself more clearly than Maycomb can see it. Not just the specific injustice of the Tom Robinson trial but the pattern, the specific institutional failure mode that a society produces when it designates certain people as permanently outside the framework of equal consideration. His closing argument is the Ni synthesis delivered in its most complete available form: the pattern of what the evidence implies about what justice requires, connected to the broader pattern of what the society's stated values require it to produce. He is not arguing the facts. He is arguing what the facts imply about what the jury is required to do if the framework means what the framework claims to mean.
His reading of Boo Radley is the Ni at its most generous: he synthesises who the man behind the Radley door is from the available evidence, the gifts in the knothole, the blanket, the specific quality of Boo's interventions, before he has encountered Boo directly. He knows, from the pattern, that the man inside is not the monster the town has designated him as. The Ni's most complete quality is the capacity to read beneath the designated surface to the pattern the designation is concealing.
"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view, until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." This is the Fe at its most complete theoretical statement: the understanding that the specific person's specific experience, accessed from inside, is the necessary precondition for adequate response to them. Atticus does not provide this as a technique for social management. He provides it as the foundational ethical claim about what it means to encounter another person. The Fe reads from inside the other person's experience. The Fe's most honest moral expression is exactly this: the requirement to inhabit the specific other person's specific situation before producing a verdict about it.
His treatment of every person in Maycomb. Bob Ewell included, for longer than the situation perhaps warrants, is the Fe's most operationally complete expression: the specific attention to what each specific person's situation actually contains, the specific response to what the attention reveals, the specific absence of the contempt that would make the attention unnecessary. He is not a saint. He is a person whose dominant function is oriented toward the specific other person as primary, and the function does not turn off in response to the specific other person being difficult or wrong or dangerous.
He made the decision to defend Tom Robinson before he had assessed the social cost. He made it the way the J-disposition makes the decisions it builds its framework around: from the synthesis that the case was worth defending, the Fe that the specific person was worth defending, and the prior framework that the law applied equally regardless of what the jury decided. He does not revise the decision when the social cost becomes clear. He does not revise it when the verdict arrives. He does not revise it when Bob Ewell spits in his face on the public street. The framework said this was the correct decision. The framework holds.
His instruction to Scout and Jem about courage, that it is not "a man with a gun in his hand" but knowing you are licked before you begin and beginning anyway, is the J-disposition's most complete self-description. The J-disposition builds the framework, assesses what the framework requires, and implements the requirement regardless of the odds against the implementation succeeding. He knew the case was lost before the trial began. He tried it as if it could be won. Both things are simultaneously true, and the J-disposition holds both simultaneously without requiring the second to negate the first.
Why Atticus Finch Is INFJ, Not INFP or INTJ
Atticus Finch is sometimes typed as INFP or INTJ. The confusion is understandable: Atticus Finch can seem as deeply personal as an INFP or as strategically withdrawn as an INTJ. But surface-level trait-matching is how typing errors accumulate. The cognitive function stack is what resolves them.
