The Verdict

Ada Lovelace is INTJ. Born in London in 1815 to Lord Byron and Annabella Milbanke, who pushed her into mathematics partly to inoculate her against her father, she met Charles Babbage at eighteen and spent nine months in 1842 and 1843 translating a French paper about his Analytical Engine. She attached seven notes of her own that ran three times longer than the paper. Note G contains an algorithm for computing Bernoulli numbers. She also worked out that the machine need not be limited to numbers at all.

Who Was Ada Lovelace?

Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, was born on 10 December 1815 in London and died on 27 November 1852 of cervical cancer, aged thirty-six. Her father was Lord Byron, who left the family when she was five weeks old and died in 1824; her mother, Anne Isabella Milbanke, directed her into rigorous mathematics in part out of anxiety that she might inherit her father's temperament. She was taught by William Frend, William King and Mary Somerville, and her mathematical ability became apparent around 1832, when she was seventeen.

On 5 June 1833, aged eighteen, she met Charles Babbage through Mary Somerville. Babbage was working on the Analytical Engine, a mechanical general-purpose computer that was never built, and he later called her the Enchantress of Number.

What did Ada Lovelace actually write?

Between 1842 and 1843 she translated a French article on the Analytical Engine by the Italian engineer Luigi Menabrea, and appended seven notes labelled A to G. The notes are roughly three times the length of the paper she was translating. Note G sets out a method for using the machine to calculate Bernoulli numbers, and is frequently described as the first published computer program. The deeper contribution is elsewhere in the notes: she saw that the engine's operations were not inherently arithmetical, and that if the relations between, say, pitched sounds could be expressed in the machine's terms, it could compose music. That is the concept of general-purpose symbolic computation, written down in September 1843 and not needed by anyone for another century.

Ada Lovelace: What the INTJ Profile Explains

Lovelace is dominant Ni, and the evidence is the gap between what she was looking at and what she saw. Babbage had a machine for producing numbers, and understood it as a machine for producing numbers. She looked at the same design and perceived that the numbers were incidental - that the engine manipulates symbols according to rules, and that anything expressible as symbols and rules is therefore within its reach. Nobody asked that question. There was no reason to ask it in 1843.

The auxiliary Te is why the insight survives as more than a remark. She did not simply assert it; she wrote it up, formally, with a worked algorithm attached, published in Taylor's Scientific Memoirs, in a structure designed to make the case rigorously to mathematicians. The notes are an implementation, and the reason we can still read the thought is that she built the vehicle for it.

Why is Note G significant?

Because it is the abstraction made concrete. Having claimed that the machine could do more than arithmetic, she demonstrated the machinery of doing anything at all with it: a sequence of operations, with looping, laid out to compute a specific result. The tertiary Fi shows in how she wrote about the work - the language of the notes is unmistakably hers, confident to the point of imperious, and she was fully aware that the ideas were her own rather than Babbage's. The inferior Se is the sad part of the record: her health, her financial affairs and her personal circumstances in the last years were handled badly by a mind that lived a long way above the immediate.

The work was done alone over nine months, and its most important content is in footnotes to someone else's paper. She was not building a public profile; she was working something out and appending it where it belonged.

NIntuitive

She saw past the machine in front of her to the class of machine it belonged to. Nothing in 1843 required anyone to distinguish between calculation and symbol manipulation, and she made the distinction anyway, a hundred years early.

TThinking

She was also rigorous about the limits, arguing that the engine originates nothing and can only do what it is ordered to do - a claim precise enough that Alan Turing was still arguing with it by name a century afterwards.

JJudging

She produced a finished, structured, published piece of work with a worked algorithm in it, in a period when the machine it described did not and would never exist. The idea was closed and shipped rather than left in correspondence.

Why Ada Lovelace Is INTJ, Not INFJ or ENTJ

INTP is the most common alternative, and the mathematical abstraction makes it plausible. The difference is that she was not exploring. Babbage was the one turning the ideas over indefinitely and leaving machines unbuilt; Lovelace took a defined project, produced a finished, structured, published document with a worked example, and made a specific claim about what the technology was for. Te closes; the notes are closed.

INFP is occasionally suggested because of the imaginative reach and the famous line about the engine weaving algebraic patterns as the Jacquard loom weaves flowers. But the image serves an argument about the generality of computation, stated precisely and defended technically. The poetry is a rhetorical instrument, not the source.
